Further Changes In What To Expect When Flying To The United States

Yesterday I wrote about significant changes passengers should expect to experience while traveling to the United States in this post “What To Expect When Flying To The United States As Of Today.

Today, one day later, the United States Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has significantly modified the restrictions issued it its previous security directive.  So…as of “today” here is what to expect when flying to the United States:

- Extended security wait times, allow at least two hours for security at the gate. While this may be faster at some airports, you need to allow this time to ensure you won’t miss your flight

- A physical pat down by security at the gate prior to boarding all flights to the United States

- A complete physical inspection of all bags being carried on flights to the United States

- Flight crew may make no announcements or reference to position or landmarks while flying over US airspace, such as “Out the left side you can see the Empire State Building and Manhattan”

The previous ‘1-hour’ restrictions have been lifted by the TSA, as have all restrictions pertaining to the use of in-flight entertainment and electronics. Passengers are free to use their laptops, enjoy the comfort of a blanket and use the lavatory during the last hour of flight, until the flight crew instructs you to stow your belongings, put your tray table away, bring your seat back into the upright position and prepare for arrival.

As security procedures and regulations are modified I will keep updating the information available to ensure all passengers traveling to the United States, regardless of airline, are informed of what to expect.

Social comments and analytics for this post…

This post was mentioned on Twitter by KateYule: According to KLM, TSA has recanted no blankie/no potty/no music rules. No word on thumbsucking. #TSAfail http://bit.ly/6lcsIF...

Hmm, won’t that get a bit tricky at the end of the flight? No more “We are now on our final landing approach to JFK”? No more “Welcome to Dulles International, please remain seated until the plane has come to a complete halt”?

So does this mean that we will no longer have the screens showing the airplane on the map? I heard that they were being cut off because it would tell the guy with the explosive shorts when he was getting close enough to Detroit. But wouldn’t the “put your seat belts on a tray tables in the upright position” announcement provide the same information.

Does this mean we can’t hear the ATC radio chatter anymore? When I’m not paying attention, the voices are always calm enough to put me to sleep. When I am, it was good to hear how far along we were. (“KLM 123 contact Boston Center at 123.45, g’day”)

Why airports do not use explosive detection dogs for airport security screening.
it is by far the best and most effective solution.
