Flying Blue – American Express Card renewed

Flying Blue has contracts with several credit card companies, including American Express. These cards offer exclusive benefits for Flying Blue members. The Flying Blue American Express card is a product that is currently available in the Netherlands and France. Triggered by a renewed contract with Amex we have announced several changes in the Dutch market. These changes have their pros and cons, and it is apparent that some of them are raising questions. We take your feedback very serious and will try to address it properly here.

As Flying Blue is a loyalty program for frequent travellers, it emphasizes on rewarding your personal flight behavior. Therefore, we chose to have this drive the Flying Blue tier status, rather than your partner’s card. This will be a phased introduction for existing card holders – the Flying Blue tier status on sub cards will remain matched until April 2013.

Some of you will indeed get less Award Miles for items purchased with your Flying Blue American Express card. On the other hand, we will give additional Award Miles per euro spent on KLM and AIR FRANCE tickets as we aim to reward flight behavior. Another reason is that we want to align the Dutch American Express card with other European payment card offerings. In return, we are introducing a few new services, which we hope you will appreciate.

The announced changes do not influence the credit card surcharges for ticket purchases.

Should you have any more questions about the upcoming changes, you may want to refer to our extensive Q&A. It can be found at www.americanexpress.nl/klm.

Dear KLM
I’m Platinum since 2003 and if everything will going well I will platinum also for next year.
Meanwhile in 2005 I did the combination of FB plus AMEX due to the possibility to share the great option of Platinum status with my wife. Sometime she had chance to flight alone and the platinum status helped a lot: long waiting time at passport check, KLM or AF lounges beside priority when she lost one connection in Brazil. All this will goner as you mentioned 1st April 2013 another fool day like the one two years ago when you changed the mileage system…I will still flight with you but what about my wife? If she has to flight alone probably she will looking for another option, what about the AMEX? probably we will cut the cost, the main reason to have it is the sharing of the FB status this reason will not exist anymore. Believe me we are really sad about but I’m sure we will not alone.

AMERICAN EXPRESS FLYING BLUE card (continued)

I just received an email telling me how much the card has improved:

1. Less than half the miles per euro spent as with the current card
2. No KLM facilities for holders of extra cards
3. Continuation of KLM’s service fee for using the card, despite the
fact that this card is endorsed by KLM.

It is clear that the improvements are for KLM and that the real
losers are KLM’s Platinum level FB members. Yes, those passengers
that KLM values so much ….. as they want us to believe.

Business is bisiness and love is .. eh

I fully understand KLM’s point of view and that this is a good change for KLM. As a shareholder I would applaud it.Financially a sound decision, but don’t present it as an improvement for the FB members, because it is not.
It’s an ugly divorce of AMEX and KLM and the most loyal passengers pay the alimony.

Feel free to tell me that I am wrong. Help me find the improvements for PE FB members.
