It’s all about coffee…
Did you know that every year 18,550,000 cups of coffee are served on KLM flights?
The Dutch know a thing or two about coffee. It’s part of what we call ‘gezelligheid’, a practically untranslatable word that has to do with comfort and cosiness. We drink coffee everywhere – on our own, with friends, at work, at home, in traffic jams and when we’re travelling. It wakes us up, and it keeps us awake. However busy we are, we always seem to find time for a nice cup of coffee. In fact we drink no less than 147 litres per person per year, which averages out at around three cups a day. This little country has innumerable songs about coffee and even TV programmes especially devoted to ‘coffee time’. In the land of the clogs and tulips, we’re practically unbeatable when it comes to enjoying the husked, dried, roasted and ground seeds of the coffee plant.
But, of course, coffee is not just one of the most popular drinks in the Netherlands alone. On our KLM flights, we can see at first hand how popular coffee is. To give you an impression, it’s drunk by about 80 percent of our Flying Blue passengers. On all KLM flights, we serve 18,550,000 cups of coffee a year. That boils down to 2,226,000 litres, weighing no less than 126,140 kilos. And, of course, all of this coffee has to be made somewhere. Every year, 600 on-board coffee machines turn 530,000 tins of coffee into a delicious drink for our passengers. This is pure ground coffee, Rainforest Alliance certified. That means that these beans were grown on Rainforest Alliance plantations. Pretty impressive figures for a drink that sounds practically the same in every language!
Are you a coffee fanatic? Do you have a good tip or a funny anecdote? Share it with us! But of course, tea drinkers are very welcome too.
